Your Questions About Exercise For Seniors With Arthritis

James asks…

Can I play fastpitch softball with Rhumatoid arthritis?

I’ve been playing for over 10 years.
Pretty much everyday of the week for 2 hrs.
I had knee surgery last summer after a softball injury in the outfield.
I was diagnosed with RA in december,
I’m on planquenil and naproxen 500mg for my arthritis.
I’m a senior, and because i missed all the showcases because of my injuries I
cant get a softball scholarship like i always wanted
and i cant play in college because i know how extreme the workouts are.
My question is it a bad or good idea.
I play centerfield which is the most land to cover.
I’m afraid to ever slide because that will put so much force on my knee.
I’m going to try to start playing next week once i get an approval note from my knee doctor.
But will I be making it worse? Any advice on how to reduce the pain before and after exercise so that I can play everyday not one day hurt for the next few days and than play again.
I want to at least be able to play my last season of my softball career..
Thanks so much.

Wow, So young to have my disease!

I played modified for years, then coached girls fastpitch, the about 12 years ago moved on to the best and most fun area of softball. I umpire! Get to be in as many games as I want. Doesn’t matter what the score is I always win! Keeps me on the ballfield. I make all kinds of new friends and get paid as well!

I met a kid a couple of years ago who just graduated college last December. He had never had a job in his life other than umpiring softball! Seriously, you can make $200 to over $500 in a weekend working travel tournaments if you work at it. My wife and I made $1700 together one long weekend (thursday-sunday!). If you want, send a pm through YA and I can tell you how to get started. It really is a blast!

What Treatment Works Best for Osteoarthritis?

I don’t know if there’s any typical age for onset for osteoarthritis, but I’m 55 years old.I have arthritis throughut my body, and of course my hands. I’m taking acetominophen with codeine. The codeine makes me tired but relieves some of the pain after a couple of hours. I don’t want to continue taking the amount of this medication if there’s a good exercise regime instead.
Would Tai Chi for seniors work? Or would an easy Yoga be better? I’m in chronic pain and the onset was very rapid. I’d appreciate any advice.

admin answers:

Alexis, Tai Chi would work quite well for you as would yoga. I would try aquatic aerobics especially if it is done in a warm pool. Movement is the best therapy that you can get so get out there and do something even if it is only to walk. Stronger muscles mean less stress on the joints and it will also help you to move the joints. Even a one pound weight used correctly can help you to gain freedom in movement and muscle strength both of which will decrease pain.

Switching my cats from Purina to Wellness Indoor?

My two senior cats (although not as senior as I thought! They are only 13 and one’s about to turn 14) were eating Purina because the vet reccomended it and my mom wouldn’t budge, although she did let me start feeding them canned food too, so they’ve been getting a spoonful each whenever they scream at me (I buy all different kinds of Innova (all flavors in regular, flex, and evo), all different kinds of Wellness, and sometimes stuff like Before Grain or California Natural to give them variety) I figured I can’t stop my mom from free-feeding anyways so they might as well eat as much wet food (and as little of the icky Purina) as possible. Well I finally convinced my mom because the vet told her that the good foods had too much protein but I showed her that Purina has more. SO glad to be ditching the unhealthy crap, I’m actually really excited lol. We need to buy canned food tomorrow anyways so I’ll pick up whatever they have of the good stuff in dry as well to start switching, but after that I want to get them on Wellness Indoor for the long run. One cat is a perfect weight (9.8) , but the younger one is 15.6 and pretty obese, although I’m working on that with exercise. I checked the analysis of all the Innova and Wellness foods and the Wellness Indoor has the lowest protein (the ONLY way my mom would budge) and the lowest fat other of course than the low fat cat foods which a lot of people say to avoid for some reason. My cats are both healthy and active except Tigger has arthritis, which I’m working on with the exercise and I’m adding Turmeric to her food. (I’m not willing to put her on kidney-stressing steroids) She still does play, and Tabitha runs all over the house . So does it sound like I’m doing the right thing? I’m hoping it might actually help Tigger’s arthritis to be getting such better nutrition, but at the very least it’ll improve her internal health. Can I expect to see them be more active, grow shinier coats, anything like that? I need some good physical evidence to convince my mom to stick with it once she pays for it a couple times.
I understand about the teeth, but I learned to home-scale my animal’s teeth with my border collie, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to pin down my cats to do the same. Most wet food probably DOES have lots of additional sugar and things, but I only buy premium, natural, wet food, plus I’l stand right in the store and read every single can to select the very I shy away from. My dog died of a brain tumor, so I’m extremely serious about my animal’s health, and learned a lot about nutrition in the course of trying to treat her alternatively after the vets gave up and we couldn’t find any specialists willing to try
meant to say I read the cans to select the best of the best and even shy away from certain types of Innova

admin answers:

I agree with Deirdre…soft food should only be a supplement and/or treat, or for medical reasons (missing teeth, damaged or hurt jaw, etc). Dry food DOES help keep teeth cleaner. Yes, cats are carnivores, but in the wild they chew on the bones of their prey as they eat, which scrapes the teeth. This is what the hard food does in exchange for the bones. Vets don’t get paid by the pet food companies to say this. I’ve seen and done enough dental cleanings on cats (and dogs) to see the evidence myself. Since cats aren’t chewers the way dogs are, they won’t chew on rawhides or teeth-cleaning toys and dry food is the only way to accomplish the teeth-scraping. This doesn’t mean you have to go with the cheapest, hardest, driest food you can find. Just that it is essential to their dental health, unless you want to have your cat developing bad teeth which then have to be pulled, requiring them to be on soft food. Plus most (not all) soft cat foods are higher in sugar content to make it more palatable. (Found this out when I had a diabetic pet!) And we all know what sugar does for the teeth!

Imagine what our teeth would be like if we only ate soft and/or mushy food, and never brushed our teeth?

As for changes in your pets, I do believe you will notice a difference in their coats, although not probably right away. That will take time as the new, healthier hairs grow in. You could very well notice an energy/activity difference very quickly, though. However, with the obese one, if you’re full-feeding, there’s not much you’re going to be able to do to reduce her weight. Even increasing exercise won’t help a lot because she’ll still have food constantly available and will be able to eat more to make up for the calories she’s burning with exercise. Limiting calorie intake and increasing calorie burning so that the burned is greater than the consumed is the only way to loose weight for any creature. But you’ll notice as her body gets more ‘efficient’ it will become healthier all the way around! :) This is why doctors (and vets) encourage healthy through diet AND exercise. Good luck!

Letter to my MP re: cannabis, thoughts please :) ?

This is the letter…I am less interested in your thoughts on the topic of the letter (although please feel free to let me know) and am more keen to know whether the letter is any good on the whole.
This is my first time in writing to an MP, can i expect a response? Also is it safe to mention that I use weed? I don’t want the feds knocking on my door anytime soon!

Dear Stephen Phillips,

The topic of drugs is and always will be in the forefront of the British media. However, I (and many others in the UK) feel that far too few understand the truth about drugs.

I will start by stating my stance on drugs and the reasons for these. I am an avid cannabis smoker. I have never touched any other (illegal) drug in my life and I will never do so. I am not personally aware of anyone who has fallen through the ‘gateway’ and as a direct result of cannabis now consumes any other drugs on a regular basis. I am FULLY aware of a few people who DO consume other drugs however they are all certain that this is through nothing but personal choice and other determining factors such as their background, where they grew up, who they associate with etc.

I am a straight A student at Branston Community Academy. I am not ashamed to say I LOVE education. I am in my first year of Sixth Form studying Maths, Further Maths and Physics. At GCSE level, I achieved only two Bs. All of my 11 grades (yes, 13 in total) were As and A*s. I live a perfectly healthy lifestyle – I have many friends (some who smoke cannabis, some who do not), I partake in regular exercise. I have no record with the police and would be considered by respected people in my life (Such as Mr. Beighton the headmaster of BCA) to be an asset to the school. I pride myself by this.

Cannabis has had zero negative affects on my life.

Last year, I studied GCSE History which included coursework on the 1930s prohibition of alcohol in America. I found this very interesting and consequently researched (from a non-biased prospective as I at this time had never consumed cannabis) modern day prohibition.

Frankly I’m shocked that the Government (which I support wholly in the vast majority of its decisions)continue to feed the public such extraordinary propaganda on the subject. Prohibition simply does not work and by teaching children and adults alike that Cannabis is so harmful is ludicrous.

When senior government advisers question the class B classification of cannabis they are ignored.

In the current economic climate in which we live, the revenue could be made from the Hemp industry alone is so enormous that it is not something which can be ignored. The medical benefits of Cannabis are so great that it is inhumane to deprive the sick of such a seemingly flawless drug.

Cannabis itself has been proven to be 0% carcinogenic and recent experiments on lab-rats suggests that THC helps to degenerate cancerous cells! Of the thousands of people who suffer with cancers, chronic pain (such as Arthritis) and other ailments which can be soothed, helped and even cured!

I can only hope that the recent acceptance of the drug ‘Sativex’ is a step in the right direction for the UK Government.

Thank you in advance for reading my message. Despite my age (17) I hope you will not look down on me and see me as a simple drug user, but will consider the points I have made.

I would love to hear your thoughts on modern prohibition of Cannabis and indeed other drugs! Do you think it is effective? Do you support medicinal cannabis?

Thank you once more for your time.

Yours sincerely,

[name edited out, for privacy]
To clarify, at the time of writing this letter, I was not smoking, high, and hadn’t smoked for over two weeks.
More to the point, after considering the risks, it is not possible for the police to arrest me for this.
I am not currently in possession & have never cultivated the drug.
I also download illegal music like millions of other people in the country. Throw away the key (and yes, I understand the moral & ethical issues with this and choose to ignore them).
I just don’t see any problem with a couple of friends having a smoke on some home grown bud. We smoke out the way of other people, not in public. We are in no way helping the drugs trade as my friend does not sell or buy. He simply grows for personal use. An estimated 2-5 million people in the UK have used cannabis in the last year. I think that figure speaks for itself :)

Thank you for your responses!

Britain used to be the proudest, noblest, strongest country on the planet.

Now an estimated 2-5 million people in the UK use pot. The welfare rolls are at a record high, and the country is virtually irrelevant on the world stage.

You are right. The facts speak for themselves. Put out the joint and clean up your act. Your country needs you.

David asks…

concerned about the life of my friend… desperately need help?

My friend used to be 140 lbs in high school but at the end of her senior year she got the birth control shot. In one year she gained 80 lbs. She went to the doctors and her hormones are all screwed up. She has Arthritis and she is borderline of pre- diabetes. I’m very concerned for her. She exercises 4 times a week for 45 minutes. she either sometimes eats bad or she will only eat 1 or 2 times a day. I dont know how to help her. She really is trying but the weight wont seem to come off. She tries to put on a front and joke around about her weight but i know that she is hurting inside. She likes this one guy but never tries to persue him becuz she thinks he wont like her becuz she is bigger. Also her mom is always making horrible comments about how she is fat and its awful. I’m afraid that her with arthritis will cripple her, she is only 22 yrs old and has been diagnosed with juvenille rheumatoid arthtitis since she was a baby. Does anyone have advice on how i can help her?

admin answers:

You are right to be concerned about your friend. Birth control shots can cause weight gain. She would be wise to get an IUD placed for birth control, a lot of them even stop you from having periods.

Your friend needs to go on a diet. She needs to eat at least one low calorie yogurt before each meal. Studies have indicated that yogurt can give you calcium, cut down on your appetited adn can suppress your appetite and the active cultures in yogurt cause you to faster, 50% faster.

She needs to eat a low fat diet as well, no fried foods. Salads with low calorie dressings. She needs to eat less, but in more frequent portions to keep her blood sugar up.

This should give your friend a start. Good luck
