Your Questions About Gentle Exercise For Seniors

Laura asks…

gentle exercises for senior citizens?

i’m 14. my mom wants me to volunteer for the . i help out with exercising. i looked up some chair exercises. they can’t go walking or do anything outside the nursing home so it has to be inside the room. would yoga be okay? i’m familiar with yoga considering i’m in yoga courses but i don’t want any injuries or sue cases since i’m not a registered yoga instructor. i would ask my older sister what she did since she used to do this at my age as well. however, she wasn’t too thrilled since she accidentally signed up for exercising instead of communication therapy or whatever so she probably made it boring. lol this is so exciting but i’m a little nervous.

Maybe you can ask a dance teacher or student to volunteer to teach for 1 hour and you can assist.

Nancy asks…

don’t worry about the swine flu?

the news is just making a biger deal then it is, there only been 335 case and 17 died it may seem alot but look you can live on it if you stay clean and wash your hands and take care of yourimmune system and how do you take care of your immune system is by Exercise. Regular, gentle exercise, like walking, helps fortify your immune system by stimulating natural killer cells that stop viruses and bacteria. Exercise is especially helpful for seniors. Women over 67 who walk or exercise regularly reportedly have fewer respiratory infections than others.

Get enough sleep. Your body needs rest to stay in tip-top shape. When it’s working to fight off a cold or the flu, sometimes rest is the best medicine.

Relax. Find ways to reduce stress, which can weaken your immune system. Listen to music, do yoga or tai chi, go for a walk, practice deep breathing exercises or other relaxation techniques, or just talk to someone about your problems.

Wash your hands. It’s an easy and to fight germs. When Naval recruits lathered up five times a day, they watched their rate of respiratory illness drop by 45 percent. Wash vigorously with regular soap and water for 15 to 20 seconds.

When you eat right and take care of your body, your immune system will take care of you. that how the only thing you need to worry about is that if your old or young but if you do get the FLU just do what i told you. IT NOT THAT BAD AS THEY SAY RIGHT NOW IT WE JUST HAVE TO SEE HOW BIG IT GET BUT RIGHT NOW EVERONE GOING NUT JUST WAIT A MOUTH.last thing think about what happen to sars where is it now and this thing not as to sars

LOL yeah and there are like lots of teenagers saying “omg I have been coughing a lot. I think I got the swine flu!!”

Do you think it would be a better seniors atmosphere if we all believed the following?

The Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,

even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble,

it’s a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,

it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life,

keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I am going to copy this and print it out so my patients can see this, and my fellow coworkers can appreciate this.

We nurses like to post stuff on the restroom door……i’ll do that, maybe it’ll improve the terrible attitudes of my coworkers that thrive on drama, and love to be mad at the world.

Great question!

Charles asks…

23 year old horse just isn’t gaining any weight?

Alright, I’ve asked this question a few times before but I guess I’m just going to ask it again.

So yeah, we have a 23 year old horse who just is NOT putting on any weight. I just don’t know what to do with him any more. He’s with out 5 month old colt out in an acre pasture, gets /some/ graze, not very much, with 24 hour hay access to make up for it and then a scoop of purina senior feed with a cup of oil twice a day.

The vet came out and acessed him and said to just give him some alphalfa so we were giving him a soaked scoop of that twice a day and his legs got very swollen so we had to take him off since he was getting to much nutrition.

What I don’t understand is how he has so much energy, he runs around when it’s feeding time like any other horse, his eyes are very bright, he’s always prancy when we take him out from brushing and grooming, he plays with the foal a little. I don’t see /why/ he’s so skinny. I mean, bone skinny, I can count all his ribs and see his spine. We’ve been doing this for about 2 months and have seen a little improvement but now that he can’t half the alphalfa I don’t know what to do.

He does have heaves so we don’t ride him at all, we take him out and let him run the property when we do chores and that’s about it. He sits in the pasture and gets loads of treats and pats and lets little kids climb all over him and babysits out foal, it’s so sad to see such a nice, gentle horse be sick.

What I don’t get is when we bought him, he was fat but they said they were having a keeping the weight on. They kept in a stall most of the time and he almost died twice so they just couldn’t do that anymore so the only thing I can think of that this exercise is just taking it’s toll on him but since he has heaves, I can’t just lock him up in a stall not that I would of he didn’t. I’m sure the foal isn’t eating his food, if anything he’s eating the foals food. His teeth are perfect, the vet checked them thoroughly and their fine and he has all of them, he has a clean bill of health besides the weight issue.

So my question is, does anyone have any tricks to getting a horse to put on some weight? I don’t know if there’s much else we can do for him, he’s been getting a bit more weezy lately and coughing a bit more than usual. I’m scared this might just be his way of telling us it’s his time. And yes, he’s up to date on worms, we do rotate, and we check his poo frequently and have seen no signs of worms.
I’ve heard about beat pulp but when I looked it up, I read that it can cause stifle issues and is just full of salt that makes a horse gain water weight?
What if I can’t feed my horses 3 or 4 times a day? I can’t go over there every day and they live at my dads and he works. They’re round bales that we keep covered in a stack. None of them have any signs of mold and if they’re wet at all we usually just toss them/burn them.

I will look into getting some of the triple crown feed.
Yeah, I suppose I shouldn’t trust hear say when it comes to the amounts of what I should feed.

And to mel, I don’t ride him… nobody does so… yeah? It’s kinda sad you have such low self esteem that you have to post unnecessary and childish comments.

admin answers:

Well, at 23 he is likely to have a metabolic issue like Cushing’s or insulin resistance, or both. Old age is not a disease, and many old horses keep weight on just fine when they are healthy.

When an older horse has a problem keeping weight on, there is a medical reason which can be identified and often be treated and resolved.

If he has Cushing’s, it affects the pituitary hormones. These hormones target all of the endocrine glands of the body to stimulate them to secrete their hormones. So, anything affecting the secretion of pituitary hormones in turn affects secretion of hormones by all endocrine glands of the body. These include the pineal gland, thymus, adrenals, pancreatic islets, thyroid, parathyroids, ovaries in mares, and testes in stallions. Hundreds of hormone levels can be affected, with a few major ones being more significant. Insulin resistance is common, and is often secondary to Cushing’s disease. Before doing anything, I would want blood work done to rule out a metabolic syndrome. The horse already has chronic lung disease, which means he has impaired oxygen exchange and perfusion which is a stress on all body tissues. is common in horses with heaves.
There is no benefit to feeding him alfalfa, which is a high protein legume hay. Purina Senior feed is a very good choice along with 24/7 quality grass mix hay. Purina senior is a very well digested and utilized feed and is fed by many people to maintain weight on their skinny thoroughbreds. I used it for years to maintain my hard keeper elderly Arab. Adding mineral balanced rice bran or corn oil to the senior feed will also help with weight gain. Both are good fat sources, and you can feed up to 20% fat in the diet. Be sure you very gradually add fats since it takes time for the body to adapt to metabolizing fats, If at any point the horse develops diarrhea, cut back on the fats and wait awhile to try to add more. Fats will add calories without harmful effects that you see when overloads of carbohydrates are fed.
